Adam W:- Unless a coherent tournament structure, including a Super Rugby franchise for the Eastern Cape is put in place on an equal competitive basis, there will forever be the sword of Damacles hanging over SA Rugby.

Firstly, if the EC gets their franchise it frees SA Rugby from pumping money into the Eastern Cape as a life support system and they are given their independence and with it comes all sorts of advantages from player retention, to being competitive at U21 level Provincial level and franchise level.

Secondly, it establishes an equal basis to compete and there is no bias, political drum beating - just pure performance.

However, the best and simplest solution is:

1. The Six Team Currie Cup starts 2010 and comprises the 6 franchises including the Southern Kings.
2. The top 5 of the Currie Cup, starting 2010, advances to the Super 15 Five from 2011-2015

The 6th team not competing in Super Rugby competes in a "B" Super Rugby tournament against Argentine, Europe etc. These guys have the plans and the vision - I wrote it for them 2 years ago.

Another screw-up from SA Rugby on this front. Having been personally involved with the Southern Spears, doesn't this reek of de ja vu? Promises, more promises and eventually...puff...nothing.

The people I really feel sorry for are the rugby fans down in the Eastern Cape. They are the ones who are being done in here. But why isn't it surprising?

Interesting stuff!

The Rapport and Sunday Times both say that SA Rugby will change to a 6 team Currie Cup in 2012.

Why not 2011 as you previously suggested & that these teams be the 6 franchises and they compete for the top 5 slots?
