JOON - The Southern Kings did a lot better than anyone thought! A fantastic effort! Hard, bruising, lots of injuries on both sides and 2 yellow cards so they played with 14 men for 20 minutes. Normally a try or 2 is scored with a man off.

I am not normally the day after analyst, but I have to tell you Matthew Turner let slip 7 points with slow reflexes in dotting down and Monye got the better of him on the ground with the touch down. Norman Nelson and Baldwin McBean should have been there in his place. They are both provincial players both with international 7's experience and they were overlooked.
Similarly Bevin Fortuin should have been pulled off the bench to play.
But that is over now and the Southern Kings do not have another game to look forward to. A crying shame and I say this with tears in my eyes.

Joon - I am a huge Heinrich Brussouw fan and he will not disappoint. He is magnificent on the ground and the best that SA has to offer. He is really good.
What is missing from this set up in the Boks is rock solid, boiler plate team spirit. It exists but has not been revealed, whereas the Lions have this in spades.
My point is that SA has all the positions covered and is brimming with talent, but if you cannot play as a team with fire and brimstone spirit you are in danger of losing.
On the tighthead and loosehead, I agree with you that the frontrow will take enormous strain and I expect as you do, that one is guaranteed that there will be a need for a couple of replacements. I hope Peter de Villiers does not leave it to the last 10 minutes and repplacements are called in just after half time.
The Boks go into this the favourites. Can they find their team spirit before the Lions?
It will be a spectacular game and contest of rugby.

Hi Tony

The Southern Kings did a lot better than you thought... In fact, if Francois Hougaard had not been injured, I think that the Lions could have gotten a bigger shock than they did.

But I agree, it would have been better if the team had more Eastern Cape players in it. They would have lost by a mile, though.

As for the Bokke Vs Lions, I think that you are being overly pessimistic. With Brussouw on the field, the Lions are going to struggle. They have not looked good against sides with aggresive fetchers.

And with Morne on the bench, if Ruaan messes up or his injury recurs he can get subbed and things will be OK. I like Frans Steyn on fullback, let's hope he uses that huge boot of his to good effect.

My only issue with the team is that I would have liked to see a specialist tighthead on the bench. But, being a tighthead, that is probably just my bias showing.

Cheers,
Joon
