Yeah. Let’s jump on the bandwagon folks. Boo Luke. Show the doos what for! Jeer him like he stole overexcitement from Noeleen. After all, nothing else can achieve the desired effect. Which, if I think things through correctly, must be for the Stormers to play their Super 14 matches to a season-long chorus of boos. That’s one way to boost your Super 14 form. The visiting teams won’t know what on earth is going on, and in all that confusion, the Stormers (or Cape Light Showers if we are being honest) will put 50 points past every team every week.

Well that’s my take on it at least. The debates on whether Luke is a doos or a hero raged on endlessly last year and I am not about to re-open them. Suffice to say I think the behaviour of the supporters at Newlands was someway below par. The fourteen guys on the pitch with Luke do not deserve to be subjected (they are on the pitch with him, it matters to them too) to that kind of nonsense. If you don’t like Luke, leave it for online forums and radio phone ins. Boo him at the mall if you like. It has no place at as great a cathedral of SA Rugby as Newlands. And it is just not rugby.

Doos or not, Luke is out there on the pitch dying for his team. I do not know of any man who’d venture out onto a rugby pitch with anything less than 100% commitment in his heart. Especially when he could say to hell with standing for his beliefs (however misguided) and go make a fortune in the frozen wastelands up North. All this boorish behaviour will achieve is to show that some people in the stands are as small minded and as lacking in maturity as the subject of their scorn. Luke had a fine game on Saturday and relatively poor ’08 form (apart from behind the mike, *snigger*) he remains a fine player and possibly our best classical mould fetcher.

You can believe that, after last year’s upheavals, he’s going out to prove himself and the 14 men around will help him achieve that. Rassie is no imbecile, he would not send out a disjointed and disunited team. If Luke is in there, it is because Rassie knows the team accepts him as one of their own still. He wouldn’t put him above the team or, if we are to reduce matters to such petty selfishness, his own career even.

So, people, put the nonsense aside and let’s support an SA team as they aim to help exorcise our Super Rugby ghosts.

Oh, except for when they play the Sharks. Boo anyone in blue and white all you like then. Please.

Here’s to Luke. May he fetch a S14 winner’s medal at the end of 2009, followed by a 3N winner’s medal and a CC winner’s medal.

Winner’s medal all round for the young man!

And may those BOOrs choke on their own puke.

Luke felt free to vomit on what many rugby fans hold pretty close to sacred. Surely he — or his handful of ANC lickspittle followers — can’t suddenly get all uppity at the thought of being on the receiving end of other peoples’ stomach contents? If you can dish it out, you’d better be man enough to take it in return?

Reports i have read was that it was only segments of the crowd, not Newlands, booing him - there are always idiots craving attention so the best way to deal with them is to ignore them and for Luke to give his answer on the field ie play out of his skin and the majority of Newlands faithful will out cheer the boorish boo-ers

1. “Doos or not, Luke is out there on the pitch dying for his team. I do not know of any man who’d venture out onto a rugby pitch with anything less than 100% commitment in his heart” - Verdict is out, definite “DOOS” - if you say something stupid (like vomiting on a jersey) in the “heat of the moment, then apologise - alternatevily, definite “DOOS” !!!

2. “Luke had a fine game on Saturday and relatively poor ’08 form (apart from behind the mike, *snigger*) he remains a fine player and possibly our best classical mould fetcher….” matter of opinion, Siyabonga - he had a fair game, but “remains possibly our best classical fetcher..”? now that is a bit far fetched !!
and, by the way, sharks play in BLACK & WHITE -maybe thats’ why Luke no longer plays for the SHARKS !!

My apologies, I wanted to add this: taken @ 17h25 today from another SPORT DEDICATED WEB SITE:
“What do you think of Newlands’ booing of Luke Watson?”
It was deserved 804 (80% of all votes)
It was a disgrace 203(20% of all votes)
Total Votes: 1007

Obviously only 20% of fellow rugby supporters are also a bunch of “DOOS-ES”? :-)

Ai, methinks the SA crowd does take the Springbok and sport in general far too seriously. Where is the fun in that? Luke is but one individual, and he is pretty harmless so that is a stupid way to waste karma from the crowd on someone that speaks his mind, even if it’s stupid.

Ag, it’s gonna take a long time for South African fans to lose their ‘Klippies & Cola’ drinking, biltong chomping, naartjie throwing, not to forget referee attacking reputation! Nevertheless, booing your own player for remarks he allegedly made is very poor play indeed.

Durban Poison on January 28th, 2009 at 5:13 pm

“Allegedly made” ? - come on, Durban Poison,we have all read the EXACT transcripts of what he said (word for word transcript) - would it have dented his reputation so badly to simply apologise for making the vomit remark - it doesn’t take a man to make comments like this at a “private meeting” (behind the rugby loving public’s back) - it does however, take a real man to stand up and apologise.

rocco on January 28th, 2009 at 6:56 pm

So when did the individual’s choice of wanting to vomit on a jumper for reasons unique to one’s own circumstances became a crime?! Nevertheless, the act is conveniently being taken out of context, as it always has during this whole unnecessary saga.

The problem with the transcript and selected alleged remarks in newspapers is that the reader still interprets it based on the misinformation that was initially spread - the damage to Luke Watson’s character had already been done. I’ve commented on other blogs on the dire lack of media skills of the general South African public in South Africa, which is in fact directly related to the dire lack of quality media in the country.

For someone whose house had been fire-bombed as a child and his family ostracised by the community because they were brave enough to stand up for their principles and beliefs, I don’t believe that Luke Watson needs to apologise to anyone.

Booing a player in your own team is more a reflection of the boo-boys’ civility and class. Despicable.

I accept (and agree) with the argument of media at times printing misinformation - however, “taken out of context” ? , surely not !!
again, the man made the following EXACT comment
” me having to wear the Springbok jersey, to keep myself from vomiting on it..” how can ‘KEEP MYSELF FROM VOMITTING ON IT…. be “taken out of context?”
Whether his house was fire-bombed (and everything that follows) is, in my humble view, not really relevant. Lets’ examine the simple facts: He was chosen,(on merit, I believe), to represent his country at a highly emotional sport during a highly emotional time (Jake White era, government/political interference etc) - he played, by choice (with “pressure” from his father) in a game that the Boks won - didn’t play a bad game (not better or worse that any “newcomer” to the Bok side would have played) - end of story….
Months later, he makes a speech, during a “private” gathering, about wanting to vomit on the Bok jersey.
Luke’s’ comment (at the time) should not be made out to be a “political statement” - his political believes and orientation is a private affair, and as such, should remain private. If he had ill feelings towards wearing the Bok jersey (and representing HIS country), he should have made those feelings known at the time (by not playing or by making a public statement on the day he received his jersey or by wearing a black armband during the match) - he chose to keep them for a selective audience MONTHS AFTER wearing the jersey, playing a game in the jersey, and yes, let it be said, being paid for playing in the jersey.
These are the simple facts of what actually transpired and that lead to the situation relating to Sundays booing at Newlands - finding reasons (and silly excuses?) for why “he did it”, is the real Despicable part.

Luke “Puke” Watson, his father and other ANC’s who wage war against the Springbok have, most obviously, hidden agendas. Otherwise how can anyone be so stupid the ignore the following two facts:
a) Nelson Mandela wore the Springbok jersey with pride. Would this greatest leader wear the jersey if it it any way resemble anything about apartheid? If Luke and his buddies’ answer to this question is yes, then they question the integrity of Madiba. If their answer is no, then they acknowledge in fact that the Springbok jersey is representative of all in the new SA.
b) The Springbok remains our national animal 14 years after apartheid. If the ANC has a problem with the Springbok, why did they not remove it from the country’s heraldics?
It is clear that only a handful of selfrightious idiots feel they would like to vomit on the springbok jersey. And they succeeded in making me feel like vomiting when I hear their names.

Best mould fetcher? I hope you’re referring to the stuff that grows on bread and his ability to scrape it off because he’s not even close to or best fetcher of a rugby ball. Jaques and Wikus are in a different league compared to this doos who does his taking off the field. As for going to the frozen north to pursue a “fortune” I’m going to need convincing that a top-flight team would take him. When Jake white asked the other s14 coaches what they thought of his ability they all agreed that he would not make their starting line-up.
As for Rassie including him in his team, I reckon the very astute Mr Erasmus is playing the political two-step.
And yes, when they come to play THE SHARKS you can be sure we will make him feel very welcome :-)

If the thought of wearing a Springbuck jersey sickened Luke so much why did he not decline from being chosen for the team and then make his statement. Money talks. I would have had more respect for his feelings then. Now as an afterstatement it stinks of other agendas. Why make a fuss of Luke? He does not deserve it, and also not to play for the Springboks.

Now REALLY considerate fans would have each taken along a bucket, you know… just to be on hand, ready, just in case… should there be a dreaded Vomiteville Horror.

I mean, have a little consideration for the other players, who would want to survive a tackle only to end up with their face in Luke’s breakfast?

Next time, buckets, ladies and gentlemen.

Puke Watson is Rugby’s Julius Malema. A no-good blowhard playing political games for private gain.

He means less than nothing to me, and he is an average player at best. Craig’s post up from mine says it best. The only fetching he does is fetching his ill-deserved paycheque.

To flog the dead horse more – he had no problems accepting money and his 15 minutes of fame in that jersey, but when it looked like he won’t ever be getting it on merit alone, he made his feelings quite clear. Nope, “doos” is not “alleged”, its proven.

Puke, its not too late to redeem yourself (and get your “L” back). Apologise for saying something idiotic, and donate ALL your match fees earned under the Bok jersey, every cent, to a rugby development fund, and you won’t be a Doos (with a capital “D”) anymore. Then you actually put your money where your mouth is and your protest will make sense. Else, you will be booed come every game. You are not welcome on our rugby fields – This has been made quite clear, not just by fans, but by your fellow players.

Go Bokke! To hell with “poolitics”, it’s a game, an institution, and undeserving of these shenanigans. Its there to be enjoyed, not to made poolitical issues over.

I think that for the Stormers the boo’s will decrease as the season goes on, but when he visits the provinces of RSA, the boo’s will ring loud and clear.

He must be very grateful that the Stormer’s are playing at home vs the Sharks and not at Absa Stadium - Kings Park.

Luke made a racist statement. How can you defend him? Isn’t racism the ultimate sin in the world? As an Afrikaner I wear the mark of racism forever. All over the world my people are remembered only for one thing, even though I’m not a racist. And now this doos goes and call me a dutchman! Where are all the the people who fight against racism now?

The point here was not to defend Luke. Sample qoute- “The debates on whether Luke is a doos or a hero raged on endlessly last year and I am not about to re-open them.”

What I am saying is this- Newlands, Loftus, Kings Park etc are great monuments to SA Rugby. Our teams also are our pride and joy. There is a history (good and otherwise) attached to these places. Is booing Luke Watson a chapter that needs to be added to their annals?

What sense is there in soiling both these with vitriol aimed at one man out of thirty who will only ever be around so long before he becomes another footnote in the history books?

or as The Sumo ( www.thoughtleader.co.za/thesumo ) said about JZ-is he that important to you?

I was one of the many thousands who booed him at Newlands and will continue to do so until the day die….
It’s Rassie’s fault for including him in the team, so if the rest of the team don’t deserve it, don’t blame the crowd, we don’t want him in the Stormers, in fact we don’t want him to represent South Africa in anyway … let him bugger of to the Eastern cape and go farm puke

I wonder how many of the more rabid writers condemning Luke could actually live in their own glass houses. I suspect that these are the same people whose families were also ardent supporters of the NP and HNP but have somehow developed selective amnesia. I wonder if these bile-slinging Springbok “supporters” have untainted pasts themselves or could list one thing that they did to bring our country to a democratic RSA. Remember how the boere ostrcaised the Rev. Beyers Naude? How many of the staunch Afrikaners had only vile things to say about him?

Luke is his own man and is entitled to his own opinions…. just let him be.

Bonga Ntshingila is an avid sports fan,he had a promising youth sports career (as in coaches always promised he would play in the next match, and teammates always promised to moer him if he shanked yet another scoring opportunity). When he realised that maybe he wasn't going to be the next Andre Joubert thanks to a few shortcomings (hand-eye co-ordination,timing,pace (buffet lines excepted) he proceeded to satisfy his huge passion for sport from the stands and immerse himself in in-depth analysis of sport and atheletes. This may (not) have been made even more inviting by the prospect of imbibing a few refreshing beverages while casting a critical eye over the latest choke/cheat/fluke by (insert geographically correct team here) and telling all and sundry just how and why he and only he saw it coming.

Bonga indulges the following sporting passions:

1.Orlando Pirates (no I have never set any stadium on fire)
2. Rugby.anywhere and everywhere it is played on the planet
3. Curling
