Should there have been any doubt about the Boks’ legitimacy as world champions, Saturday’s heroics would have put these to rest. Our biggest enemy conquered in their stronghold, and when everyone and their dog gave us no chance. Ricky Januarie is unlucky to be a hero in this age. Rarely has a man so deserved to be honoured with a hundred virgins and celebratory games in his honour for the glory he brought to his nation. That renegade coloured gene is quite something when it kicks in good, hey! Well played, laddie!

As it stands this morning, the Boks stand on the Olympus of the rugby world with all challengers slain (Six Nations champs? Check. World number one pretenders at home? Check. As for the Wallabies, please. No disrespect to Robbie Dean, but we could take them with a B-team). No one has any ammunition against us. Well, except maybe those doubters for whom a four-year unbeaten run from PdV’s charges would still not be enough; they who blame the coach when we lose and make excuses for our opponents when we win.

Reading some of the press reports and online forums this weekend, you’d swear the Boks had committed a cardinal sin by daring to beat the All Blacks in their citadel. I almost wondered what country I was in — that is, until I saw the latest outburst from Julius Malema. Thank God for little bits of South Africana amid the pseudo-Orania gloom. We lose to the All Blacks and PdV is an incompetent coach and wouldn’t know forward play if it blew up an ATM in his face. We win and it’s because Richie McCaw wasn’t there, Aaron Mauger and Jerry Collins have gone North, the lock pairing is new to Test rugby, the ball is oval, there were only 15 of them on the pitch and so forth.

Leaving alone the fact that you can only play whoever is put in front of you on the day, are they suggesting that the All Blacks are a one-man team? In that case, then, what does it say about the other coaches who couldn’t succeed down under?

I won’t even go into the absence of John Smit, Fourie du Preez, Jacque Fourie, the retired, incomparable Os, and BJ Botha. Butch is yet to hit his best form; we have a new coaching team. We are no worse off than the All Blacks when it comes to disruptions and changes, yet no one even considered these as excuses when we lost last week. PdV was merely an incompetent token appointment. Some people do make one almost wish Jacob Zuma would put down the baby oil, buy a GPS and finally locate that damn machine gun.

Nonetheless it serves no purpose to dwell on the naysayers, except to say, once again, well played, Bokke, and here’s to ramming it down Wallaby throats.

As for Messrs Snor, Gold and Muir — well done to you, sirs, and long may the successes continue! Hier kom die Bokke!

PS: Before you mistake me for somebody gracious and above pettiness, I told you so!

Well done indeed! Brilliant win and exactly what we needed. A few comments though:

Our loss in the first game was largely due to poor tactics and selections that left the rugby public a little confused to be fair. Result…Snor 0 - 1 ABs. He deserved the criticism he got in that department. The other stuff from Craig Dowd etc was bull but his tactics were poor. He was man enough to admit it on TV…half a point back to Snor.

From the time the team was announced this week, hope ebbed back because he had moved back to a closer replica of the world cup squad (with Percy back to patch the tactical kicking). Its a winning formula, just ask Jake White or Clive Woodward or…In a test of that magnitude you have to have seriously calm heads and guys who know they can do it when the chips are down. Super Snor 1 - 1 AB’s.

I see a guy who is prepared to admit making mistakes and is fixing them rapidly, thinking in his feet. I also see a guy who is not scared to take on the AB’s and Ozzies in the psychology dept. The refing (bar Matfields 50-50 call) was pretty good and I think our message was received during the week - we will publicly point out any bias we see in evidence so watch your whistle! Our organisation, bench and positional selections are still a little unsettled and confused but thats just tweaking and in general we seem to be patching up the holes quickly.

I don’t agree with your analysis of Robbie Deans and Oz this weekend. I am scared of the Ozzies as underdogs, they will come at us hard. Do not underestimate them. I think it will be a very tough game to win.

Nice, Siyabonga.

Point me at these Debbie Downers that I may pour the vitriol of my scorn upon them.

Grant mate.

First up thanks for the feedback mate. Don’t agree with some of your points re: Snor, but I cannot fault your reasoning and that’s what this is about hey?

As for the Wallabies, I am fully aware of the danger ANY Robbie Deans team poses but I don’t think the Wallabies will be more than a speedbump for complacency this year. Certainly after this season they will be back to their annoying best (assuming they get decent front-rowers)

They have a good crop of youngsters who have awesome potential (Beale etc) but not yet.

Paddy mate, Go to any rugby forum, you will find them. Sad really. Can we not unite behind our team, better or worse?

“Some people do make one almost wish Jacob Zuma would put down the baby oil, buy a GPS and finally locate that damn machine gun.”

Left me speechless.

Now I wish all the ‘rugby experts’ who missed their calling to Boots and All would keep it down while the rest of us celebrate.

Excellent piece, Ntshings.

Thanks for putting out there what many think, but lack the Double-Danglies and the talent to convey it.

On Grant’s comment about the squad being patched up from last weekend to vaguely reflect Jake’s RWC winners, just some point of discussion:

1. Percy played one of his worst games I have ever seen him play, it was very uncharacteristic of him. He should’ve been subbed early on, for his own sake.
2. Butch looked like a gay kid who was forced by his father to play rugby in an attempt to toughen him up. He was lethargic, soft and uninterested. He kicked late and was generally on another fairy planet, like he would’ve rather been playing with Barbie and Ken and their summer holiday house.
3. Ricky, excellent move to help the team clinch it at the end, but personally I was calling for his head since the 1st half. He made four pee-wee rugby errors, that try and his defensive kicking are his only saving grace.

One last thing, I was listening to the foreign commentary (just to agitate my soul more and to exponentially increase my enjoyment of the egg on their faces at the end of the match should we have won) and even they were baffled by the blatant ignoring of Brian Habana on the wing by his team-mates carrying the ball forward.

Habana stayed relevant in that team even with the lack of ball in hand opportunities. He was brave, as all coloureds that I know are, and he was on par chasing down everything – ‘Why don’t the SA backline let the Best Winger In the World do what he does best?..’ was the question I heard from the commentators even them, in utter disbelief.

I rest

World Champions? I thought that we are the holders of the World Cup. We did not play Australia or New Zealand in the World Cup competiton, so it is not a true reflection of the best rugby teams in the world. The world rankings are a true reflection and I still see New Zealand on top of that ranking.

Firstly-www.irb.com

see the rankings on the right hand side of the screen.

Secondly-As I said above, you can only play whoever is put in front of you. Says a lot about the Wallabies (who lost to an England we royally shafted twice in the World Cup) and the All-Blacks that they couldn’t make it to the final to face us.

Were we supposed to play their matches for them so they’d make it?

I heard from a friend (was busy WP supporters crying in Kbly at the time) that the New Zealand Hearald said Ricky’s try was luck or something to that effect. Ja well no fine. See the tears in my eyes. Probably one of the greatest tries to clinch a victory that I have ever seen and deserves a special place in SA rugby history.
Bonga. Couldn’t we have some forum talk regarding the latest offerings regarding television reffing, assistant refs and also the apparent rise of inconsistent rulings by refs?
It seems to me that the introduction of all these measures to make the game flawless in terms of precision decisions, has taken the sparkle out of the intention of a lot of viewers and players, who want to have a lekker time and argue like hell over what should have been, or what could have been,
By pet grief is a team that slogs away at the tryline for infinity, eventually pushes over, only to be told that the TMO couldn’t see the ball grounded. The boys deserve better. Only advantage? 5m scrum , just enough time to fetch a cold one in the fridge.

Here in Ireland we have been infatuated with NZ/Aussie coaches for the last few years and it has not worked. The ‘Boks were a joy to watch last weekend - committed, aggressive, focussed and seizing on every opportunity. If we had 10% of that attitude instead of the antics of hair-gelled and injury-prone little rich kids from Leinster, we might have some hope. Good luck you guys, enjoy every minute of your success, you have earned it

Bonga Ntshingila is an avid sports fan,he had a promising youth sports career (as in coaches always promised he would play in the next match, and teammates always promised to moer him if he shanked yet another scoring opportunity). When he realised that maybe he wasn't going to be the next Andre Joubert thanks to a few shortcomings (hand-eye co-ordination,timing,pace (buffet lines excepted) he proceeded to satisfy his huge passion for sport from the stands and immerse himself in in-depth analysis of sport and atheletes. This may (not) have been made even more inviting by the prospect of imbibing a few refreshing beverages while casting a critical eye over the latest choke/cheat/fluke by (insert geographically correct team here) and telling all and sundry just how and why he and only he saw it coming.

Bonga indulges the following sporting passions:

1.Orlando Pirates (no I have never set any stadium on fire)
2. Rugby.anywhere and everywhere it is played on the planet
3. Curling

One of the above may be made up.
