Stephen Jones delivers a scathing (tongue in cheek?) putdown of South African scrummagers.

Our loose forwards should stick their heads in the scrum and start pushing. You can't expect 5 to do the work of 8.

Yes Peter, the coach will need to get clarity on the interpretations of the laws as they are to be applied at scrum time. Also vital is to understand what will be applied by the next two referees at the tackle: sure, the tackler must be allowed to play the ball (from either side), but he has to be on his feet without his body weight supported in any other way. Surely also the tackled player has to be given a second (perhaps just a split second) to place the ball once tackled?

These stats are not official but by reckoning the penalty count was 13 - 5 in Saracens favour (2nd half 8-1). The shortarms awarded were 2-0 to Saracens. I included in Saracens numbers the penalty awarded in front of the posts that Hougard converted as a drop goal. There were 21 scrums in total and the Springboks conceded 3 short arm penalties and 2 full penalties. Over and above the penalties, Saracens two tries came directly from scrum pressures.
